Juniata College mens Basketball
The Juniata College has a contract with a photographer to shoot photos at all their sporting events. On occasion that photographer has been busy and they have called me to substitute which I very much appreciate. Any time I get to use my camera is a good time.
This time they ask me if i would shoot the senior day games for the Men’s Volleyball. This was an almost all day event which started at 11:00 am.
I didn’t realize the speed difference from the high school games I had seen before to these college games. I did some reading on how to shoot volleyball game and gave it a try through the first game. First on the side of the net then went to both ends. I think things worked better on the side. That’s where I stayed the majority of the time. I wish I would have had more practice, it was only toward the end of the final match that I was getting on to predicting where the ball would be.
I think you have to do that more than trying to follow it. As fast as it was moving there was no way. I did notice that the lighting on one side was a lot better than the other. It looked like some florescent lights were turned on in one area that were not in another.
I took a lot of shots that were blurry, which I deleted. I thought that I had the shutter speed fast enough by looking at the images on the back of the camera. I can only say I am glad I took so many shots, over 700, because about half were no good. Knowing that I would have taken about twice as many.
After the volleyball was over they ask me to go to a Juniata Women’s Softball game. It was one of the coldest softball games I have ever attended. I feel sorry for the girls that were playing because I am pretty sure they were all as cold as I was, or more.
I like getting work like this, even though I have shot other sports, including some high school volleyball. This was faster, a lot faster and was a good learning experience for me. I hope the folks are happy with the pictures and I look forward to, hopefully, doing more work with them.
